Blue Paint, Open Window
Jonas set another pot on the stove and exhaled slowly as the first drops of rain began to fall. The cabin kitchen had become their sanctuary, the one brass lamp casting honeyed gold over worn wooden tables and mismatched chairs. Emil sat beside him at the small table, reading the same book Jonas had been referring to earlier. Jonas appreciated the silence, but today it was too loud.
Jonas glanced over at Emil, who had been unusually quiet. Jonas knew Emil loved literature, and Jonas had read the book aloud only minutes before. Now Emil was reading with his head slightly bowed and his fingers smudged with ink. Jonas wanted to say something, to ask if he understood it, but the thought of Emil's frustration made Jonas's chest tighten.
Jonas set down the ladle and rubbed his palms together. Emil looked up, and Jonas's breath caught. Emil's eyes were tired, but there was something bright behind them. Jonas had seen that look many times before, and knew it meant Emil was going to say something important. Jonas knew Emil had been hiding from something for weeks.
The rain picked up outside, but Jonas welcomed the sound. Emil's gaze held steady, and Jonas felt the tension in the room change subtly. Jonas smiled gently and said, "You're worried about the ending."
Emil closed the book and looked at Jonas. Jonas could see the question forming, waiting for confirmation. Jonas had read the ending already, and knew what Emil felt about the final line. Jonas smiled and said, "I think we both know it's not the first time we've faced the same ending."
Emil nodded slowly and said, "I've been avoiding it."
Jonas reached across the table and took Emil's hand. Emil's skin was warm, and Jonas felt the pulse beneath his wrist. Jonas asked softly, "Why?"
Emil shook his head. Jonas thought about how Emil had been distant for weeks, avoiding even basic conversation. Jonas had known Emil well enough to understand that Emil was not being distant on purpose. Jonas asked, "Are you ready?"
Emil met Jonas's gaze and nodded. Jonas felt a rush of warmth spread through his body. Jonas stood up and invited Emil to follow him. Jonas led Emil to the couch, where they sat side by side. Jonas placed his hand on Emil's knee and said, "Do you remember the first time we kissed?"
Emil smiled faintly and said, "When we first met."
Jonas smiled and said, "The night you said you had read the book, but you didn't like the ending."
Emil chuckled softly. Jonas felt Emil's hand move against his own and began to understand that Emil was ready. Jonas took Emil's hand and held it tightly before saying, "We've come a long way."
Jonas felt Emil's hand tighten against his. Jonas continued, "We've always known the ending. We've been avoiding it because we thought we weren't ready."
Emil looked into Jonas's eyes and said, "I've been afraid of what you'd think of me."
Jonas felt his heart race. Jonas looked Emil straight in the eyes and said, "I love you, Emil. I've always loved you."
Emil looked shocked for a moment, then smiled. Jonas watched Emil's body relax and said, "I've been waiting to hear those words for a long time."
Jonas leaned in and kissed Emil gently. Emil kissed back, and Jonas felt the warmth spread through his chest. Jonas held Emil tightly as they kissed, both of them smiling against the other's lips. Jonas whispered, "We're ready for the ending together."
Emil nodded and said, "We're ready for the ending together."
The apartment lights had long dimmed, leaving only the brass lamp burning softly on the kitchen counter, casting elongated shadows across the worn wooden floor. Jonas knew that Emil liked the night when all the bright colors left and left room for the quiet parts of the night to surface. Jonas felt the same way. The warmth between them throbbed through Jonas's body, and Jonas realized they were close to the same precipice. Jonas placed his other hand on Emil's knee and smiled softly.
"I've been afraid of the ending because I kept waiting for it to come to me, Jonas," Emil said, his voice barely above a whisper, his gaze locked on Jonas's. Jonas felt the tension in Emil's body ease, and Jonas realized that Emil had been waiting for Jonas to finally bring the ending into the open. Jonas smiled and said, "I wanted the ending to come from you because I've always respected the ending you choose for yourself. Jonas felt his heart race at the thought of Emil waiting for Jonas to finally bring the ending into the open. Jonas took a deep breath and continued, "I don't want to look back on the ending and wonder what happened after."
Emil looked up at Jonas and nodded. Jonas realized that Emil had been waiting for Jonas to finally bring the ending into the open. Jonas placed his other hand on Emil's knee and smiled softly. Jonas felt the warmth of Emil's hand beneath his, and Jonas realized that Emil had been waiting for Jonas to finally bring the ending into the open. Jonas smiled and said, "I know we've been hiding from the ending, but I'm ready to bring it into the open with you." Jonas watched as Emil nodded slowly, and Jonas felt the tension in the room shift again.
Jonas leaned in and kissed Emil gently, and Jonas felt the warmth spread through his chest. Jonas placed his other hand on Emil's knee and smiled softly. Jonas realized that Emil had been waiting for Jonas to finally bring the ending into the open. Jonas looked into Emil's eyes and said, "We've been waiting for the ending together." Jonas kissed Emil again, and Jonas felt the warmth spread through his body. Jonas smiled and said, "We're ready for the ending together." Jonas felt Emil's hand tighten against his and kissed him gently. Jonas felt the warmth spread through their bodies, and Jonas realized that Emil had been waiting for Jonas to finally bring the ending into the open.
