Velvet Between Us

The bookstore closed at one, but Adrian and Nico had stayed past closing anyway. Adrian kept counting the inventory cards, making sure to match them against the receipt. Nico sat beside her on the worn couch with her shoes beside the chair, pretending to read the catalog. Adrian knew better. Nico had been watching Adrian for over an hour.

The apartment lights were low when Adrian finally looked up from the spreadsheet and found Nico staring at the ceiling. Nico smiled slowly and offered Adrian a glass of wine and the couch.

"I thought you'd notice before midnight," Nico said.

Adrian smiled, then blushed. She had been watching Nico for a long time too.

"I thought you had other shifts," Adrian said.

Nico looked at Adrian for a long moment.

"I had a morning shift today, then a late one," Nico said, "but the only time I feel like I can breathe is at night."

"I feel the same way."

They spoke softly over the untouched wine. Adrian finally touched Nico's hand, and it was warm and real.

"Do you remember when we met?"

"Vera's poetry night?"

"Yes. I think I was reading aloud. You kept glancing at me."

"You were reading aloud?" Nico asked, laughing.

"I think I was."

"Anyway, I came back from the bar because I had forgotten my wallet."

"You looked thirsty."

"And you looked... different."

Nico smiled and said, "You looked proud."

Adrian laughed. Nico looked at her, and the room seemed to warm. Adrian felt both excitement and fear. Nico moved closer.

"I've wanted to tell you for a long time."

Adrian felt her chest tighten.

"I've wanted to tell you for a long time," Nico said, "but I kept waiting for the right moment."

"I think it's here."

Nico looked at Adrian, then at the untouched wine, then back at Adrian. Adrian felt the tension slowly build. Nico stood, then knelt beside the couch.

"I've been counting the minutes."

Adrian smiled. Nico took Adrian's hand and held it tightly.

"We can leave, if you want."

"No," Adrian said, "we can't leave."

Nico looked at Adrian, then looked at the apartment around them. Adrian realized that leaving meant the end of something. Nico looked up at Adrian and smiled. Adrian smiled back. Nico kissed her gently. It was soft, warm, and full of longing. Adrian kissed Nico back, and the apartment filled with the sound of their breathing and the gentle pressure of their bodies. Nico pressed Adrian gently down onto the couch, her body warm against Adrian's. Adrian felt both fear and excitement. Nico placed a hand on Adrian's face and looked into her eyes.

"Tell me what you want."

Adrian answered without hesitation. Nico smiled, then kissed her again.

The apartment lights dimmed further as Adrian felt Nico's breath against her neck, warm and steady. Nico's hand moved from Adrian's face to her hair, gently combing through it as if memorizing every strand. Adrian closed her eyes, lost in the sound of Nico's voice beside her. "Tell me what you want." Adrian answered without hesitation. Nico smiled, then kissed her again. The apartment filled with the sound of their breathing and the gentle pressure of their bodies. Nico pressed Adrian gently down onto the couch, her body warm against Adrian's. Adrian felt both fear and excitement. Nico placed a hand on Adrian's face and looked into her eyes. "Tell me what you want." Adrian answered without hesitation.

Nico smiled, then kissed her again. The apartment seemed to hold its breath around them, neither moving closer nor retreating. Adrian felt the steady warmth of Nico's presence, the gentle pressure of her body, the soft touch of her lips. Nico began to move her hands through Adrian's hair, gentle and deliberate. Adrian let out a quiet sound, a mix of surprise and pleasure. Nico stopped and looked at her, eyes dark and hungry. "Do you want this?" she asked softly. Adrian nodded, her voice barely audible. Nico smiled. "Then let's take it slow."

They spoke no more, only moving together, pressed against one another, both cautious and eager. Nico's lips found Adrian's neck, trailing gentle kisses down her collarbone. Adrian felt her pulse quicken, her body responding to the warmth of Nico's touch. Nico moved her hands down Adrian's back, cupping her waist as if grounding herself. Adrian placed her hands on Nico's face, fingers tracing the soft curve of her jaw. Nico's kisses grew warmer, more insistent, her lips brushing Adrian's before lingering on her skin. Adrian pressed herself into Nico, not just with her body, but with every feeling. Nico placed a hand on Adrian's chest, guiding her downward, her touch gentle but insistent. Adrian felt her own heart beating faster, her breath mingling with Nico's.

The apartment filled with the sound of their breathing, the warmth of their bodies, the promise of something real, something chosen.

Nico's hand stayed on Adrian's chest, not to hold her back, but to keep pace with the tremors she felt beneath Adrian's ribs. Adrian pressed her palms against Nico's shoulders, then slowly moved her fingers into her hair, tangling them there. Nico let out a soft, broken sound, half moan, half laugh, and pulled Adrian up until their mouths met again. This time, Adrian kissed her back with the same urgency that had burned through her body from the moment she first stepped into the bookstore, when Nico had said Adrian's name with the same care that a stranger would use when handing you a book you had been looking for. Adrian felt the apartment closing around them, the floor beneath them, the silence between them thick with every word left unsaid.

Nico's fingers trailed down Adrian's back, slow and deliberate, mapping every inch with the same care that she reserved for the first editions on the store's shelves. Adrian let out a quiet sound, half question, half surrender. Nico pressed her forehead to Adrian's and whispered, "You're safe here." The admission was careful, chosen, and it sent a shiver through Adrian. They had chosen this evening because they wanted it. They had chosen this evening because they needed it. Adrian kissed Nico again, not because she had to, but because it burned from the inside out. Nico responded with the same urgency, her mouth open, her body open, everything open. Adrian felt the warmth of Nico's body, the pressure of her hand on her thigh, the hush of the apartment closing in.

Nico's voice broke through the haze. "Adrian. Tell me what you want."

Adrian answered without hesitation.
