The bookstore closed at one, but Elena and Darius kept the shop open until closing because Elena had insisted they could work together until one. Elena had scheduled her shift on purpose. They had been working together for weeks. Elena liked working with Darius.

The store emptied early. Elena locked up and turned on the lamp by the side table where they usually sat. They were halfway through the inventory sheet when Elena realized they were both too tired to read. Elena closed the book. Darius closed the tablet.

The apartment let out onto the street. Elena opened the door. The city traffic changed in the distance. Elena stepped into the hallway and paused.

Darius said, “Do you think we should play music?” Elena said, “I think we should hear the city.” Elena stepped off the stairs. The apartment let out onto the side street. Elena stepped out into the night. The wind lifted Elena’s hair. Elena said, “I’ve been thinking about us.” Elena said, “I’ve been thinking about us.”

Darius said, “This is the first time we’ve been alone like this?” Elena said, “It’s been a while.” Elena said, “Do you remember that night I stayed over after the store closed?” Darius said, “You told me you didn’t want to risk being too close.”

Elena said, “I’ve changed.” Elena said, “I want you.” Elena said, “Do you want me?” Elena said, “I was scared we’d play this safe, and we would always be playing safe.”

Darius said, “I thought we could keep doing that.” Elena said, “I thought we could, too.” Elena said, “I thought we could keep pretending.” Elena said, “And I realized I wanted more.” Elena said, “I’ve been thinking about you constantly.”

Darius said, “You kept asking if I thought we could do this.” Elena said, “I didn’t know if you wanted to.” Elena said, “I didn’t want to risk being rejected.” Elena said, “I didn’t want to ruin us.”

Darius said, “I thought we could still be close.” Elena said, “I thought we could, too.” Elena said, “I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to lose you.” Elena said, “I thought we could keep being together without crossing that line.” Elena said, “I was scared if I said anything, it would change the way we felt about each other.”

Darius said, “It changed the way I felt about you.” Elena said, “You think I changed?” Elena said, “I thought I was being honest, and you were being honest.”

Darius said, “I’ve been thinking about you, too.” Elena said, “I knew you were.” Elena said, “I’ve been thinking about you all the time.” Elena said, “I’ve been thinking about you all the time.”

Darius said, “I want you.” Elena said, “I want you.” Elena said, “Do you love me?” Elena said, “Do you love me?” Elena said, “Do you love me?” Elena said, “Do you love me?” Elena said, “Do you love me?”

Darius said, “I would tell you that I do, but I don’t think I am ready to say those words yet.” Elena said, “That’s okay.” Elena said, “I’m okay with that.” Elena said, “I just want you to want me.” Elena said, “I think I know you want me.” Elena said, “I think I know that.” Elena said, “I want you to want me.”

Darius said, “I do.” Elena said, “I know you do.” Elena said, “I think I do.” Elena said, “I think I do.” Elena said, “I love that about you.”

The wind lifted Elena’s hair. Elena said, “I love you.” Elena said, “I love you.” Elena said, “I love you.” Elena said, “I love you.” Elena said, “I love you.”

The apartment lights flickered, casting shadows over the worn wooden floorboards Elena had cleaned just hours ago. Elena stood beside the bookshelf where they had once laughed over the scent of paper and ink, now softened by the distant traffic from the street below. Elena stepped closer to Darius, staying within the radius where the apartment lights caught the curve of his neck. Elena traced the line of his jaw, remembering that same night they had planned to leave the store only to stay in the back room with the door closed. Elena smiled, and the warmth of it seemed to settle in her chest.

Darius looked down at his hands, still folded against Elena’s chest. “You said it,” he said quietly, not taking his eyes off the floor. Elena nodded. “No, I’m saying it now,” she corrected. Darius looked up then, and Elena felt the pull of something ancient between them, the same gravity that had kept them circling one another through months of restraint. Elena kissed him softly on the mouth, and this time, the surrender was mutual. Elena felt the boundaries between them melt, not because of love or lust, but because of truth.

After the kiss ended, Elena rested her forehead against his. They let the silence stay between them, not empty, but full. Elena asked if he had been thinking about leaving all along, and Darius admitted he had considered walking out more times than he cared to admit. Elena laughed softly. “I kept hoping you would.” Darius kissed her again, this time with more pressure, more confidence.

When Elena finally pulled away, she stepped back, looking at the apartment around them with new eyes. Every book on the shelf, every borrowed lamp, every ruined window screen had become a symbol of the life they were choosing. Elena smiled and said, “I love you.” Darius kissed her gently, this time on the forehead. “I love you.”
