Compartmentalized Rain
The spa room looked abandoned except for the woman sitting beside the window. Adrian had chosen the treatment room because he liked the sound of water dripping from the ceiling, but after the hours lost waiting for the conference to conclude, the silence became oppressive.
Nico arrived with rain soaking through the fabric of their coat. Adrian had barely registered the arrival until the door clicked shut. Nico stood at the threshold, dripping wet, their expression cautious.
The morning had been ruined by the weather, but Adrian liked how Nico looked in the rain. They were not the type to rush through anything, and Adrian liked that they took time for details. Nico placed the towel on the bench and spoke without preamble. “I figured you’d be mad about the delay.”
Adrian smiled and shook their head. “I was worried you wouldn’t come.” They meant it. They had not invited anyone to the spa, had not said anything about the conference. They were not used to being invited out. Nico stayed by the door until Adrian invited them in, then stepped closer and took note of everything.
The treatment room was square with a low ceiling, offering no room for privacy. Adrian liked the intimacy of the arrangement, the small space making honesty sharper. Nico sat beside them, close enough to watch Adrian’s face. The treatment had been scheduled for two, but both of them were early. Nico spoke first.
“I wanted to let you know I’ve been seeing other people.” They said it plainly, without performance. Adrian liked that quality in them. The honesty made the tension sharper, not weaker. Nico continued. “I’ve been seeing a guy for a few months, but I’m still here for you because I want to be more than a fling for you.”
Adrian understood the sentiment. They liked that Nico did not reduce themselves to labels. They liked that Nico admitted they wanted something more. Adrian smiled and reached out, taking Nico’s hand. “I’m not mad. I’ve been seeing other people too.” They admitted it plainly, enjoying how Nico’s eyes widened.
The treatment began with gentle massage, the oil warming their skin. Adrian appreciated the silence at first, the weight of honesty settling between them. Nico spoke up softly. “I’ve been worried about being too forward.” They admitted, “I wanted you to feel like you could push me away if you wanted to.”
Adrian appreciated the care in Nico’s honesty. They had been worried themselves. Adrian pulled Nico down beside them and asked plainly, “Do you want me to move along?” Nico hesitated. “I want you to stay. I want you to want me.”
Adrian liked that. They liked that Nico did not pretend to want more than they could offer. Nico took charge of the treatment, directing Adrian’s hands with care. They kissed Adrian softly, lingering, neither rushing nor hesitating. Adrian liked the warmth of Nico’s touch, the care they took with every movement of Adrian’s hand. The massage became something closer, something warmer. Adrian stayed quiet, allowing Nico to set the pace.
Nico finally broke the silence. “You know I’m not a romantic type.” They admitted with a small smile. “I’m not good at sweet talk, but I want you.” Adrian liked that honesty. They liked that Nico did not pretend to enjoy the romantic theatrics. They leaned into the honesty, returning the sentiment with care.
The afternoon sun streamed through the tall windows, painting narrow stripes across the treatment room. Adrian closed their eyes, listening to the sound of Nico’s voice as it softened on the edges of the conversation. They spoke with honesty, not the performative kind that Adrian had known from some people. Nico did not feign interest, nor did they overstate the affection. They admitted that they liked being touched, that they liked Adrian’s hands on them. Adrian liked that they did not try to make themselves sound more interesting than they were. Nico admitted that they did not understand patience, that they burned too brightly. Adrian appreciated that quality too. Nico did not hold back. They did not pretend to be something they were not.
Adrian liked that. Nico asked plainly if Adrian wanted them to leave, and Adrian did not refuse. Adrian did not run. Adrian did not pretend to want more than they could offer. Nico did not leave either. Nico did not let the silence settle between them. Instead, Nico placed a hand on Adrian’s chest, and Adrian understood. Nico understood. Nico appreciated the honesty. Nico took a deep breath, and Adrian felt the warmth of their touch against their skin. Nico placed a hand on Adrian’s chest and kissed them softly. It was not a slow kiss, nor was it rushed. It was warm, deliberate, mutual. Adrian liked that Nico did not treat them as a punchline.
Nico treated them as someone they wanted to stay. Nico treated them as someone they could stay with. Adrian liked that. Nico remained close after the treatment ended, staying by Adrian’s side. The rest of the afternoon passed slowly, with soft touches and careful honesty. Adrian appreciated the openness of it, the lack of performance. Nico appreciated the care. Nico appreciated that Adrian did not leave. Adrian appreciated that Nico did not leave either.
